Day 15 – Teotihuacan

We were up by about 6:30 for some errands, a bit of laundry and journaling for me. We had a bit of entertainment out our window, with a hot air balloon or two..

After an OK breakfast buffet, we readied for hiking the pyramid site. We all piled into Ken's truck and on the way, a quick stop at an ATM replenished diminishing pocket money for some. The pyramid area is only a few blocks away and after admission fees were paid, we parked in the shade, since Aero had to stay in the truck(with water and food of course) then headed down the row of vendors toward the pyramids.

Pyramid of the Sun
The whole area of the pyramids is fascinating. The pyramid of the sun is the most popular, since it can be climbed to the top, about 130 steps and those are steep and narrow, for the most part. It's where all the human and animal sacrifices were performed. We all made it to the top for views, photos of the surrounding features, and a group picture.

Ooohm'ing for ??

The chant.....

Next was a walk down The Avenue of the Dead to the pyramid of the moon, which was where the souls entered the underworld. No climbing there, it was roped off above the first level.

Pyramid of the Moon, walking down the Avenue of the Dead..
An aside here, walking down any of the roadways leading to any of the pyramids, was exposure to constant street hawker attack. They sold imitation Mayan masks, other stone statues, flutes, toy bow and arrows, semi(very semi) precious stones, obsidian balls, blankets, table cloths(Mayan calendar) and jewelery. It was constant. Every 25 yards, or so, you could see an approaching hawker. Ken was a buyer, Don became a buyer(note the buying involved extreme haggling) , Jim and I came away empty. Oh darn! Nothing I wanted..

Tom and Kenny under attack...

We slowly wove our way between attacking vendors to the Museum, which was a very interesting hour, or so, stroll. Many archeological exhibits and storyboards describing facets of the civilizations.

The photo album of objects and storyboards, describing  the civilizations at the site can be found https://picasaweb.google.com/mikthebik/TheMuseumAtTeotihuacan?authkey=Gv1sRgCLas3Nut5v-M4AE#

Following that, walked back to the truck to wait for Roger at the planned meeting time and got back to the hotel about 2:45(3:45 local) our time to relax a bit before dinner at 5PM. We piled back into Ken's truck for a short ride to La Grotto. The restaurant is built into an underground grotto, with the dining area 3 stories down. Kind of cool, kind of touristy, but the food was very good. My cream of corn soup was smooth and flavorful, not just corn, and the medallions of beef were tender and very nice. I found 2 of the 3 medallions was just enough, so Aero got the final one.

Back to the hotel, not much to be done, except gather the laundry we'd put outside on the balcony patio chairs to dry and head for the bed for reading and writing, where I am now. We'll have an 8AM breakfast tomorrow and have a relatively comfortable 170 mile ride tomorrow to San Miguel Allende. Might even find a place to watch the super Bowl. Not sure what time it's on, or if I really care.
